| Musical Suffolk in June Founded in 1948 by Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and Eric Crozier, the Aldeburgh Festival takes place for a number of weeks in the middle of June each year. Encompasing classical and contemporary music, opera and the visual arts. Attracting artists and audiences to Suffolk from all over the world. Although Britten’s own music always features, the Festival has continually nurtured new composers and musicians. |
Birdwatching for Beginners At the mouth of the Minsmere River is an RSPB Nature Reserve. RSPB Minsmere lies on the Suffolk coast between Southwold and Aldeburgh just below Dunwich Cliffs. The reserve has 1,500 acres, made up of reedbeds, artificial lagoons and islands, heath and woodlands, several observation hides including one on the beach. Minsmere is a superb place to enjoy a day out, whether you are a birdwatcher or simply want a country walk with the family. There are events throughout the year such as Birdwatching for Beginners, Discovering Minsmere and hands on activities likes 'Nests and Nestboxes'. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded and about 100 species breed here each year. You can hire binoculars from the visitor’s centre to see the birds up close and for families with children, can borrow an Explorer backpack. The RSPB has worked hard to make the reserve not just great for birds, but also for visitors. It has a large visitor centre with tearoom, shop and toilets. |
