Flintshire - Historic County - Wales Flintshire is situated in North East Wales, known as the gateway to North Wales. The city of St Asaph is home to the smallest cathedral in Britain, set on the banks of the River Elwy. Gwaenysgor where the Church of St Mary Magdeline is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Bodelwyddan Castle houses a significant group of portraits from the National Portrait Gallery, including works by George Frederic Watts, John Singer Sargent and Ford Madox Brown. The town of Holywell takes its name from the town's major feature, the world famous St Winefride's Holy Well; one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Flint Castle built on the River Dee has walls over 23 feet thick and this means that Flint Castle has an entry in the Guiness Book of Records as having the thickest castle walls. Prestatyn one of the holiday resorts that are dotted along the North Wales coast; Popular with holiday makers for over 150 years, with four miles of sandy beaches. Historic market town of Mold, where in 1833 they discovered a 4,000 old Bronze Age gold cape found in a tomb at Bryn yr Ellyllion (Fairies' or Goblins' Hill); The cape is currently displayed in the British Museum but there is a fine replica to be seen in the town.
