Anglesey - Historic County - Wales
  • Anglesey is an island off the north coast of Wales, 25 miles in length and for holiday makers blessed by the Gulf Stream's milder climate.
  • Separated from mainland Wales by 'The Menai Strait' (Afon Menai) a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 14 miles (23 km) long; accessed by Stephenson's Britannia Bridge and the famous Telford Suspension Bridge.
  • Anglesey was known as the 'Mother of Wales' (Mam Cymru) during the middle ages because of its fertile fields, which formed the breadbasket for the north of Wales.
  • The whole coastline has been designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Beauty'.
  • Visit the fortress like structure of Beaumaris Castle, built by Edward I after his defeat of the Welsh Princes.

  • The main breeding ground for the Arctic Tern can be seen at Cemlyn Nature Reserve along with a variety of other birds.

Beaumaris is a beautiful old town
located on the banks of the Menai Strait on the eastern side of the historic Island of Anglesey. The town has a history of pirates and was a favoured landing place for smuggled goods. These days tourists come to the town to walk the heritage town trail and admire the old inns and elegant Georgian and Victorian town houses. Beaumaris has it's own moated castle and a Gaol built in 1829 by Joseph Hansom, the man who also designed the Hansom Cab. Beaumaris Goal gained notoriety for its brutal punishment methods and hangings, which took place there. Nowadays visitors can explore this massive building with its dimly lit corridors, spartan cells and places of punishment. A wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities are catered for in and around the town. The town and sea front has views across the Menai Straits to the mountains beyond of Snowdonia. Beaumaris, Anglesey is the perfect location for a short or long break.
